upgrading

I have a i3 250gb HHD 4g RAM
I read previous threads, but was still looking for some clarification.

I read that I could run i7 920xm, but will my chip set and motherboard have this capacity?
Previously under the impression that i5 was as good I could hope to run.

Would this make a more noticeable difference then upgrading the RAM?
